Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in Child Care Settings

Abstract: A large proportion (20.4%) of SIDS cases occur in child care settings. Factors associated with SIDS in child care settings include older age, race, and highly educated parents. Previous studies have reported that unaccustomed prone sleeping puts infants at high risk for SIDS; this characteristic was found to be associated with SIDS in child care and may partly explain the high proportion of SIDS cases in child care settings. Parents must discuss sleep position with any caretakers of their infants. In addition,… Show more

“…Despite the remarkable decrease in the rate of SIDS and decreased frequency of prone sleeping nationally, the proportion of SIDS deaths occurring in child care remained constant between 1996 and 1998. 69 Many child care deaths have been associated with the prone sleep position, especially when the infant is unaccustomed to being placed in that position. This is particularly concerning, because unaccustomed prone sleep increases the risk of SIDS by as much as 18-fold.…”

“…This fact is justified by the high prevalence of the phenomenon in child care settings, as indicated in the study (20) , which reports 20% of sudden infant death syndrome during sleep in child care settings. A study conducted in the United States, investigating 1,916 cases of sudden infant death syndrome, found that 20.4% of these deaths occurred in child care settings (21) . Therefore, the risk of sudden infant death syndrome is extremely high during sleep in daycare settings (22) .…”

“…However, it should be noted that a change in sleep environment may be associated with an increased risk of death. 34 Maternal tobacco use during pregnancy has been demonstrated to be a major risk factor for SIDS, [35][36][37][38] increasing the risk of SIDS twofold. 39 It is unclear why infants who die on sofas are more likely to have mothers who smoke.…”
