Sudden unexpected infant deaths associated with car seats

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency, circumstances, demographics, and causes of death of infants dying while seated in car safety seats. A retrospective review of a pediatric autopsy database at a specialist center over a 16-year period was undertaken to identify any infant deaths (aged <1 year), in whom death occurred while seated in a car safety seat. “…3 A second retrospective review highlighted 14 car seat associated unexplained infant deaths out of 1465 autopsies, 10 of which were outside of travel use. 4 This supports recommendations that car seats should be used for travel only. 5 3 further articles identified from references highlighted work demonstrating reduced oxygen saturations in infants in simulated moving car seats.…”

“…The significance and potential impact of these problems is not clear, 8 9 but there have been reports of deaths of infants who have been left in a sitting position, including in car seats-both on journeys, and when parents have used it as an alternative to a pushchair or cot for the infant to sleep in. [10][11][12][13] One survey noted that 94% of infants, below 5 months of age, spent over 30 min a day in seating devices including car seats. 14 The mean was 5.7 ±3.5 hours.…”

“…In most of the other 10 cases under study, car seats were being used inappropriately outside of a moving vehicle; in one case the infant died while left unattended. (15) One Canadian study identified 17 deaths over a 10-year period that occurred while infants were in a car seat. Of these, seven were explained by comorbid conditions.…”
