Suggestion of an Oral Hygiene Program for Orthodontic Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate: Findings of a Pilot Study

Abstract: The program demonstrated a significant plaque reduction. The highest reduction between the first and second sessions reveals the need to reinforce the initial instructions at all sessions. The greatest reduction observed at shorter intervals highlights the need for regular follow up. More controlled studies on larger samples should be encouraged to evaluate the validity of the index and the efficacy of similar programs worldwide.

“…The importance of using interdental brushes and mouthwash liquid by all patients was also stressed especially by those with a fixed appliance. Some authors suggest two major factors for orthodontis to take into account specific needs of patients who were the subjects of the examination (disease susceptibility, condition of the mouth) and individual characteristics (preferences, manual dexterity and lifestyle) 10 . However, there is no doubt that taking adequate and concrete measures and following the recommended procedures can significantly preserve oral health of patients who wear fixed orthodontic appliances.…”

“…Literature reveals the presence of several biological risk factors for the development of oral diseases, in particular dental caries and periodontal disease in patients with cleft lip and palate. [12][13][14] This implies high prevalence of these diseases in these people. [6][7][8][9] Therefore, another positive aspect in the school life of the child with labio-palatal cleft has to do with the participation in collective preventive activities related with oral health.…”

“…12 In addition, the presence of orthodontic braces, common at the time of mixed dentition, also contributes to plaque accumulation. 13 Added to such factors inherent to the anomaly, the early introduction of saccharose to the child's diet, aiming at the child reaching the recommended body weight to perform the surgeries. After incorporation of this habit to the palate of the child, it becomes difficult to remove it, contributing to an unfavorable diet with respect to the development of dental caries.…”
