Suicidal poisoning with mercaptodimethur–morphological findings and toxicological analysis

Abstract: In the western countries, the number of fatal intoxications with plant protecting agents has decreased to some extent due to laws restricting the use of highly toxic pesticides like halogenated hydrocarbons. Nevertheless, in consideration of the easy availability of most plant protectants, the small fraction of such fatalities among suicides and intoxications is astonishing. An 80-year-old woman died of an intoxication with methiocarb (mercaptodimethur), a carbamate type pesticide and as such a reversible inhi… Show more

“…Residual amounts of MC have been monitored in the water, soil, honey, plants, fruits and vegetables (Blasco et al, 2005; González-Rodríguez et al, 2008; Huertas-Pérez and García-Campaña, 2008; Picó and Kozmutza, 2007; Pirard et al, 2007; Saraji and Esteki, 2008; Strankowski and Stanley, 1981; Topuz and Alpertunga, 2003; Wilsont and Foos, 2006). Moreover, the first clear report on the fatal poisoning of a human with MC has been reported recently (Thierauf et al, 2009). Despite extensive use of MC, very limited studies on the mechanisms of its action other than the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity are currently available.…”
