Suicide and accidental deaths among patients with primary malignant bone tumors

Abstract: Highlights This is the first study about suicide and accident death in patients with bone tumors. Patients had higher risk of suicide and accident death than all residents. Amputation increased suicidal risk but did not increase the risk of accident death. Clinicians should pay more attention to the psychological status in these survivors.

“…At present, the commonly used treatment of NSCLC in clinical practice is mainly chemotherapy. However, there is still a lack of specific evaluation indicators for evaluating the severity of NSCLC and the efficacy of chemotherapy [11][12][13]. In recent years, PLR, as a biochemical indicator with strong operability, stable results, and low cost, has been favored by researchers.…”

“…Table 4 shows that gender and marital statuses are shared in uencing factors of suicide and accidental death in pancreatic cancer patients. Male with pancreatic cancer had a greater risk of suicide and accidental death than females, while a study of suicide and accidental death among bone tumors patients found a similar difference (Yu et al 2021). However, we think the fundamental reasons for gender variations in the risk of suicide and accidental death are due to undiscovered confoundings factors (such as income, lifestyle, and family structure).…”

“…This may be explained by the higher degree of depression and demoralization caused by the altered gait, function, stability, strength, and appearance resulting from amputation ( 37 39 ). Therefore, clinicians should take some measures including long-lasting follow up and psychological support to lower the risk of death from non-sarcoma diseases such as suicide ( 39 , 40 ).…”
