Suicide Ideation and Attempts in a Pediatric Emergency Department Before and During COVID-19

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: Elevated rates of mental health concerns have been identified during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In this study, we sought to evaluate whether youth reported a greater frequency of suicide-related behaviors during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic as compared with 2019. “… 16 Suicide ideations and attempts have increased in correlation with COVID-19 stressors. 17 Such publications should set off alarms as much as vaccine safety events would shock the world. Past issues and present worries about vaccine safety need be incorporated in a broader, more holistic approach to children’s protection.…”

“…Adolescents were found to represent a particularly vulnerable cohort [71]. Concomitantly, the clinical frontlines reported both a significant decline in the incidence of admissions for psychiatric emergencies during lockdowns [72][73][74] and increased suicide ideation and self-harm rates [75]. Such a rise in psychiatric emergencies overall, and specifically in suicide behaviours, is already documented in manifold reports and news article easily found through a Google search: we now await high-quality published studies empirically confirming this alarming trend beyond the grey literature, framing it developmentally as well as clinically.…”
