Suitability of Duckweed (Lemna minor) as Feed for Fish in Polyculture System

Abstract: In the present study, we conducted an experiment to evaluate the effects of duckweed (Lemna minor) as feed on fish production in polyculture. The experiment had 2 treatments where in treatment 1 (T1) ponds were supplied with duckweed as feed and in treatment 2 (T2) ponds were kept as control (without supply of duckweed). Average survival rates in T1 and T2 were 90 and 89%, respectively. The specific growth rates (SGR) were higher in T1. Calculated net production in T1 was 6.25 tons ha. -1 yr. -1 and in T2 was … Show more

“…Though they have been used for the safety of humans, their harmful effects are alarming on other non-target animals like fish. Contamination of water by insecticides, either directly or indirectly can lead to fish kills and reduced productivity of waterbodies Siddika et al, 2012;Talukdar et al, 2012;Nupur et al, 2013). In Bangladesh, more than 300 types of pesticides and insecticides are used for crop protection in agriculture (Uddin et al, 2016).…”

“…One species from genera Lemna-L. minuta was recently found in Bulgaria (Kirjakov & Velichkova, 2016 investigation of usage of duckweed as a feed component for fish feeding used L. minor (Yılmaz, Akyurt, & Günal 2004;El-Shafai, El-Gohary, Verreth, Schrama, & Gijzen, 2004;Talukdar, Shahjahan, & Rahman, 2012). The studies connected with the test of other species from Lemna as a feed substitution in fish feed were practically missing or were very rare (Bairagi, Ghosh, Sen, & Ray, 2002).…”
