Due to the geographical features of Turkey, it can grow in almost every region. It is a valuable product for Turkey both economically and traditionally. Vine products are generally produced for domestic consumption in Turkey, and only a small proportion of the products are exported. For this reason, it is of great importance to produce grapes in areas with the most suitable growing conditions in order to increase productivity, ensure sustainability, and increase the share of vine products in foreign trade. This study aims to determine suitable areas for viticulture in Denizli province using the GIS and AHP methods and based on the criteria determined according to natural and human factors. The study further aims to evaluate the effect of determining the appropriate places for vineyards on the wine sector. Within the scope of this study, the natural and human factors that provide the most suitable environmental conditions were determined and divided into subcategories. The correlation of each category with the existing vineyards was calculated and evaluated using the frequency ratio method. Thus, the points to be received by each criterion were determined and based on this, a reclassification was made and the percentage within the study area was calculated. The distribution percentage of each criterion classified using the GIS Tabulate Area analysis within the total area was compared with the percentage of the existing vineyards and the frequency rates were found. Approximately 31% of the surface area of Denizli was found to be very appropriate or extremely appropriate for vineyards, which means that more than 70% of the existing agricultural areas are suitable for vineyards. The areas with the highest percentage of very low and low suitability are the natural vegetation and wetlands. 94% of the existing vineyards and almost all of the wineries are located on the areas with high and very high suitability, which is the reason why Denizli is on the foreground in the production of wine grapes. The expansion of vineyards and the increase in grape production with the selection of suitable areas emphasize the economic importance of viticulture, contribute to the current situation of the wine sector based on viticulture, and support the development of the sector.
