Sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin removal using a horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass reactor

Abstract: The antibiotics sulfamethoxazole (SMTX) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) are commonly used in human and veterinary medicine, which explains their occurrence in wastewater. Anaerobic reactors are low-cost, simple and suitable technology to wastewater treatment, but there is a lack of studies related to the removal efficiency of antibiotics. To overcome this knowledge gap, the objective of this study was to evaluate the removal kinetics of SMTX and CIP using a horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass reactor. Two di… Show more

“…In this work, a series of multifunctional resins with different amounts of ion exchange groups were synthesized via a sequence of polymerization, amination and post-crosslinking reactions. As one of the widely used drugs in human and veterinary therapeutic treatment 25 , ciprofloxacin (CPX), which can induce antibiotic resistance genes in microorganisms and pose health risks to human health 26 , is selected as target compound. As an amphoteric substance, CPX molecules represent different electric properties at diverse pH.…”

“…(97,101). Souza et al (102) have tested the HAIB bioreactor for bioremediation of groundwater contaminated with gasoline and Chatila et al (103) have used the HAIB bioreactor for sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin elimination achieving a removal efficiency of 97-100 %.…”

“…The aerobic-based activated sludge processes show a large variation in SMX removal depending on operating conditions (e.g., hydraulic/sludge retention time (HRT/SRT), temperature) with studies reporting from nearly 0% [12], less than 30% [13], 30%-60% [14], 60%-90% [15], more than 90% [16] and even complete removal [12]. In comparison, the anaerobic-based processes like upflow anaerobic sludge blanket [17,18], anaerobic sequential batch reactor [19,20] and anaerobic immobilized reactor [21] are reported to show a consistent high removal (over 80%). The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR), coupling anaerobic digestion and micro/ultra-filtration (MF/UF) separation, can not only achieve high removal of bulk organics in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and high methane production as a recovered energy source [22], but also achieve a consistently high SMX removal (over 90%) during municipal wastewater treatment [23][24][25][26].…”
