Sulfonylurea resistance in Amaranthus hybridus from southern Brazil

Abstract: Amaranthus hybridus is a C4 broadleaf species widely spread across Brazilian agricultural territory. Recently, several herbicide resistance reports have been documented in southern Brazil, including the reports for enolpyruvilshikymate-3-phosphate (EPSPS)-and acetolactate-synthase (ALS)-inhibitors. The objective of this study was to confirm the existence of an ALS resistant (R) A. hybridus population from Paraná state. Dose-response experiments were conducted with R and a known susceptible (S) population with … Show more

“…1) were generated as commonly described in the literature (Burgos et al, 2013;Takano et al, 2016;Takano et al, 2017;Zobiole et al, 2019;Albrecht et al, 2020b;Albrecht et al, 2020c). Resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in A. hybridus has been observed in neighboring Paraguay, like Brazil, where there are cases of A. hybridus resistance to glyphosate (Resende et al, 2022), multiple resistance to glyphosate and chlorimuron (Heap, 2023), and resistance to chlorimuron and metsulfuron (Mendes et al, 2022). In Argentina, multiple resistance to glyphosate and ALS inhibitors has been highlighted (García et al, 2020).…”

“…Recently, cross-resistance to imazethapyr and chlorimuron-ethyl was confirmed in Argentina to A. hybridus [31]. Another study in Brazil found cross-resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in an A. hybridus population, with resistance factors of 6.9 and 6.5 for chlorimuron and metsulfuron-ethyl, respectively, but resistance to imazethapyr was not verified [49].…”

“…Currently, A. hybridus populations have been identified with resistance to inhibitors of photosystem II, acetolactate synthase (ALS), protoporphyrinogen oxidase, 5-enol-pyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), and to the synthetic auxin herbicides (Heap 2023). Amaranthus hybridus biotypes from Brazil were identified with resistance to the EPSPS inhibitor, glyphosate, and to ALS-inhibiting herbicides (Mendes et al 2022; Resende et al 2020). However, the mechanism of resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in biotypes from Brazil has not been characterized.…”
