Sun protection practices of beachgoers using a reliable observational measure

Abstract: A reliable, observational measure designed to assess population behavior at the setting level showed low use of sun protection practices among beachgoers. Test-retest reliability, the inclusion of low body protection, coding for age, and skin tone are recommended for future versions of this system.

“…The campaign was developed successfully in terms of participation and satisfaction: over 400 beachgoers were recruited in just eight days during the summer. Most participants exhibited a long history of high‐risk sun exposure evidenced by the prevalence of sunburns during childhood (up to 70%) and poor sun protection behavior reported by beachgoers (<50% of all sun protection practices except for sunscreen use) as described in the literature . There was a significant improvement of the intention to change after intervention.…”

“…Interrater reliability for assessing clothing ranged from 0.77 for sunglasses to 0.88 for upper body clothing. 14 A Sun Habits Midstudy Observation was conducted throughout the day to record the type of clothing participants wore while on the beach. Researchers attempted to locate each participant involved in the study and unobtrusively record what they were wearing on the head, upper body, lower body, and feet.…”
