18F-FDG PET/CT of Cervical Carcinoma

Abstract: There is increasing evidence that FDG PET/CT has a role in the primary evaluation of cervical carcinoma-in particular, for evaluating lymph node status and distant metastatic disease. PET/CT is also helpful to determine prognosis, assess treatment response, and evaluate disease recurrence.

“…PET/CT is the most expensive diagnostic modality, but has a superior sensitivity (93-96%) and specificity (93-95%) compared to CT and MRI [8]. PET/CT may help distinguish tumor recurrence from a post-therapy residual mass or enlarged reactive lymph nodes, a distinction that is difficult with conventional CT or MRI [9].…”

“…The FDG is taken up readily by rapidly dividing tumor cells thus providing their location in the organ (Moreno-Sánchez et al, 2007). Sophisticated equipments accurately align and combine metabolic and anatomical images of PET/CT that provide fine anatomical and physiological information (Patel et al, 2011). Utilization of FDG-PET is also helpful in grading, treatment, therapy monitoring, and prognosis of cervical cancer (Grigsby, 2008;.…”

“…FDG-PET has established roles in the initial evaluation of disease extent, monitoring of therapeutic response, and restaging at the time of disease recurrence [20] in large part as a result of the systematic evaluation of this modality by Washington University investigators.…”
