Super-Resonant Intracavity Coherent Absorption

Abstract: The capability of optical resonators to extend the effective radiation-matter interaction length originates from a multipass effect, hence is intrinsically limited by the resonator’s quality factor. Here, we show that this constraint can be overcome by combining the concepts of resonant interaction and coherent perfect absorption (CPA). We demonstrate and investigate super-resonant coherent absorption in a coupled Fabry-Perot (FP)/ring cavity structure. At the FP resonant wavelengths, the described phenomenon … Show more

“…These resonant sensor systems are mainly built using FBGs with complex scattering sources (SCs) which couple two counter-propagating modes (traveling wave (TW)) in a ring resonator. This mode coupling generates a spectral response characterized by two asymmetric resonance lines (called ”mode splitting” in the scientific literature and used for many applications, besides the strain sensing [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ].…”

“…To experimentally record the spectral responses of the FP ring resonator, an integrated cavity output technique can be used [6], and the C R can be adjusted through a fine tuning of the FP loss (by adjusting a tunable absorber inserted along the optical path l FP ) while the C R slope can be controlled through the features of the couplers (by adjusting the coupling coefficients of two tunable couplers).…”

“…Recently, because of the strong analogy between quantum mechanics and optics, the principles of parity time (PT) symmetry systems and PT symmetry breaking systems have been successfully transferred from the physical context of Hamiltonians describing the features of quantum systems to the scattering matrix describing the spectral properties of optical systems [1]. In this scenario, several investigations about intriguing phenomena consisting of loss-induced transparency [2], nonreciprocal light transmission [3,4], perfect coherent absorption [5,6], enhancement in sensing [7], and non-linearity [8] have been reported in literature. However, the possibility of controlling the propagation direction of light in passive and linear coupled optical cavities has not yet been investigated.…”

“…This may complicate the circuit design if the unwanted signal occurs deep within the circuit. Integrated CPA devices could resolve this difficulty by serving as efficient 'sinks' for optical signals [113,115,117,121]. In the quantum optics limit, the ability to control and remotely trigger perfect absorption of single-or few-photon states could likewise be useful for quantum information processing [137].…”

“…Advances towards the use of CPAs in integrated nanophotonic structures have recently been reported [115,121]. A CPA was realized using a photonic silicon racetrack resonator coupled to four input/output ports [115] (Fig.…”
