Supercritical fluid CO2 extraction of essential oil from Marchantia convoluta: global yields and extract chemical composition

Abstract: Abbreviations:SFE: Supercritical fluid extraction GC-MS: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometryThe essential oil of Marchantia convoluta was obtained by supercritical (carbon dioxide) extraction using methanol as a modifier. Global yields were determined according to the orthogonal design. Compared to M. polymorpha, M. convoluta is quite rare and was thought of negligible by people many years ago. The major identified constituents in M. convoluta were flavonols, triterpenoids, and steroids (Cao et al. 2005;Chen … Show more

“…M. convoluta was only found in China 4 . The major identified constituents in M. convoluta were flavonoids, triterpenoids, and steroids [5][6][7][8][9] .The dried leaves were used in China to protect the liver and to treat tumefaction of skins. A high dosage of flavonoids from M. convoluta (20 and 40 µg/mL) can significantly reduce the activity of ALT (Alanine aminotranferease) and AST (Alanine aminotranferease) in the serum of mice with acute hepatic injury caused by CCl 4 and increase the contents of TP (Total protein) and ALP (Alkaline phosphatase), as well as inhibit the auricle tympanites of mice caused by dimethylbenzene 1 .…”

“…In addition, SFE requires very little to no dry-down time prior to the analysis and hence limits the thermal degradation (Capuzzo et al, 2013). There are many literature about the natural materials extraction with SFE such as Marchantia convoluta (Chinese herb) (Xiao et al, 2007). SFE of plant material is a growing topic of interest with solvents such as carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), propane, butane or ethylene.…”

“…It is a cheap, eco-friendly, and generally recognised as a safe component. SFE using CO 2 is also attractive because of its high diffusivity and allows the extraction of easily oxidised compounds in natural products (David & Selber, 1996;Xiao et al, 2007;Wright & DePhillipo, 2015). However, conventional supercritical fluid carbon dioxide (SC-CO 2 ) suffers from low polarity which affects the efficiency of extracting the compound of interest.…”
