Superdeformation in the Doubly Magic NucleusC2040a20

Abstract: A rotational band with seven gamma-ray transitions between states with spin 2 Planck's constant and 16 Planck's constant has been observed in the doubly magic, self-conjugate nucleus (40)(20)Ca(20). The measured transition quadrupole moment of 1.80(+0.39)(-0.29)eb indicates a superdeformed shape with a deformation beta(2) = 0.59(+0.11)(-0.07). The features of this band are explained by cranked relativistic mean field calculations to arise from an 8-particle 8-hole excitation.

“…After nearly 15 years of systematic search, new "islands" of superdeformation (SD) have been found in the nuclear chart around the A 40 mass region (e.g., 36 Ar [1] and 40 Ca [2]). Surprisingly, these light and symmetric (i.e., N = Z) nuclei in the latest SD "archipelago" are magic and near-magic systems, whose ground states have a spherical shape.…”

“…The energy of the shoulder that can be seen at a β 2 value around 0.5 is significantly lowered for the tensor interactions T44 and T62. This shoulder can be related to the existence of a superdeformed band in 40 Ca [41,42].…”

“…Because of recent progress in experimental techniques, it has been possible to determine that strongly deformed states exist in 36 Ar and 40 Ca, by the observation of γ-ray cascades typical of rotational bands [3,4]. These bands are called super-deformed (SD) bands.…”
