Superficial Acral Fibromyxoma of the Distal Phalanx of the Thumb

Abstract: Superficial acral fibromyxoma is an uncommon benign tumour which was first described recently (Fetsch et al., 2001, Human Pathology 32: 704-714). It has been reported several times since, suggesting it is more common than initially thought.

“…Mild nuclear atypia or pleomorphism of the stellate cells is present, but atypical mitotic figures are absent. Typically the satellite cells are positive for CD34, CD99, vimentin and focally for EMA; however, the results of the EMA are not a consistent finding [2][3][4][5][6][7] . The proliferation of blood vessels is noted in the myxoid area and the mast cells are easily identified.…”

“…Complete excision is curative, and this was also the case with our patient, who had no recurrence at the 12‐month follow‐up after excision. These tumours are important because they can cause deformity of the nail plate; most cases require nail avulsion during surgical procedures; they can rarely be associated with deformity of the bone; and occasional local recurrence has been reported after incomplete removal …”

“…Superficial acral fibromyxoma usually involves the fingers and toes, and big toe is the most frequently affected site. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Most cases of superficial acral fibromyxoma tend to occur in the subungal or periungal regions, although two rare cases occurring on the ventral surface of the digit have been described. We report a case of superficial acral fibromyxoma, which developed at the big toe.…”
