“…Methods used for orbital reconstruction in human craniomaxillofacial surgery are many and varied. They include the use of synthetic allografts such as polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon), silicone, or titanium mesh implants; local soft‐tissue flaps using the masseter or temporalis muscle; nonvascularized bone grafts from the rib, calvarium, or iliac crest; vascularized osteocutaneous free flaps such as the free scapular flap; or distant free muscular flaps using the latissimus dorsi or rectus abdominus, which require microvascular reanastomosis techniques rarely used in veterinary surgery.…”

“…A masseter muscle flap has been used for facial reconstruction in man and dogs . In man, with a superiorly based masseter muscle flap, the masseter muscle is attached and pivots at the zygomatic arch of the maxilla . This technique is considered a relatively safe, single‐stage procedure and is easily adaptable for the repair of various defects because of flexibility in the movement of the pedicle.…”

“…Restriction of mouth opening is reported after superiorly based masseter flaps in man and is thought to occur due to muscle contraction of the masseter muscle flap. This complication was not observed in our case, possibly because of a different orientation of the muscle flap in the horse, which was reflected dorsally and sutured to the maxilla, where contraction of the muscle flap would be unlikely to cause closing of the mouth.…”

“…Due to the proximity of the masseter muscle to the caudal maxilla and ventral orbital floor, it has already been used in humans to stabilize the ventral orbit . The masseter muscle consists of superficial, middle, and deep layers that are covered by a strong glistening aponeurosis and is positioned laterally on the ramus of the mandible of the dog.…”
