Supervised weekly rinsing with a 0.2 % neutral NaF solution: results after 5 years

Abstract: The effect on caries prevalence of the permanent dentition was evaluated after 5 years of weekly rinsing (130 scheduled rinses) with a 0.2% neutral NaF solution. The program was conducted in the Three Village Central School District, New York, U.S.A. (F less than or equal to 0.1 part/10(6). First to sixth grade children who rinsed from 1 to 5 years respectively had a caries prevalence reduction of 45.3% (DMFT) and 47.4% (DMFS) compared to baseline scores of children who were examined before the rinsing program… Show more

“…3, 4), it becomes apparent that differences in caries progression observed between the two exper imental groups are solely on account of more pro nounced caries initiation in the lower fluoride group. This finding is in agreement with observations from clinical trials of topical agents, where the differences in the caries reduction are seldom observed after the 1st year, implying that the benefit is mostly in the re tarded initiation of new lesions, while the reduction is far less, if any at all, in the progress of the already es tablished caries [Ripa et al, 1983].…”

“…This agrees closely with the hypotheses of Disney et al (1990), who suggested that only the use of popular¯uoride products such as dentifrice, gel and varnish can lead to a signi®cant prevention of dental caries. The reduction achieved by following this programme as described by Ripa et al (1983) could be partly con®rmed in the BELCAP study.…”

“…The effect of fluoride mouthrinses on the incidence of caries in children has been extensively investigated during the past four decades in a large number of clinical trials. These have demonstrated the effectiveness of fluoride mouth rinses in reducing dental caries by 15–45% over a period of 2–6 years (2–5). A Cochrane review by Marinho et al.…”
