Supplementary education can improve the rate of adequate bowel preparation in outpatients: A systematic review and meta-analysis based on randomized controlled trials

Abstract: Background Colonoscopy is widely used for the screening, diagnosis and treatment of intestinal diseases. Adequate bowel preparation is a prerequisite for high-quality colonoscopy. However, the rate of adequate bowel preparation in outpatients is low. Several studies on supplementary education methods have been conducted to improve the rate of adequate bowel preparation in outpatients. However, the controversial results presented encourage us to perform this meta-analysis. Method According to the PRISMA state… Show more

“…A retrospective observational study found enhanced instructions improved the quality of bowel preparation [20]. Several previous meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials showed that enhanced instructions could significantly improve the quality of bowel preparation and ADR [21][22][23][24][25]. These forms of enhanced instructions include visual aids, videos, phones, short message services, social media apps, and smartphones.…”

“…Unfortunately, patients may forget the specifics of taking a purgative before their colonoscopy since bowel preparation education is often provided only once during colonoscopy scheduling. Doctors or nurses usually present it via oral explanations and written instructions [ 21 , 22 ]. Elderly persons may not benefit from printed directions, and as a result, different randomized controlled trials have shown the benefits of pre-endoscopy education.…”

“…Moreover, older patients may find it challenging to understand them. As such, there is still a need for better techniques and methods to help patients understand the procedure for taking laxatives [ 21–34 ].…”
