Supplementation of Alpha-lipoic acid-loaded nanoliposomes in semen extender improves freezability of buffalo spermatozoa

Abstract: This research was designed to explore the protective effect of alpha-lipoic acid–loaded nanoliposomes (ALAN) during cryopreservation of buffalo sperm. Buffalo semen was cryopreserved in a tris-citrate egg yolk extender without any supplement (ALAN0, control group) or with ALAN at levels of 25, 50, 75 or 150 µg (ALAN25, ALAN50, ALAN75 and ALAN150, respectively). The ALAN had a size of 171.80 nm and a negative zeta potential (− 43.40 mV). The progressive motility, vitality and membrane integrity significantly im… Show more

“…As previously demonstrated, the high level of oxidative stress induced by the cryopreservation process may be responsible for the deterioration of post‐thawed sperm quality and decreased fertility potential in farm animals (Abdelnour et al., 2023; Asturiano et al., 2007; Baghshahi et al., 2014). Therefore, the addition of nano form of antioxidants into freezing extenders has a positive effect on fertility competence.…”

“…The CBENF administration improved both the conception rate and litter size per doe. In our previous work, the addition of propolis (Abdelnour et al, 2023) or alpha lipoic acid (Hassan et al, 2022) loaded nanoliposomes improved the fertility rates in buffaloes.…”

“…Overall, these studies demonstrate the potential benefits of flavonoids, such as naringin, hesperidin, and quercetin, in improving various aspects of semen quality. Their antioxidant properties and ability to enhance the effectiveness of other antioxidants make them valuable additions to semen preservation techniques (Abdelnour, Hassan, et al, 2023; Abdelnour, Sindi, et al, 2023). Further research is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms of action and explore their applicability in practical settings.…”

“…They also found similar results with 0.5% alcoholic pollen grain extract, enhancing these characteristics. This improvement in sperm freezability may be due to the ability of propolis to enhance motility parameters, and antioxidant status, and reduce the OS, and apoptotic status (Abdelnour, Hassan, et al, 2023; Abdelnour, Sindi, et al, 2023).…”
