Supplementation of Bouea macrophylla Fruit Juice Prevent Oxidative Stress in Rats Fed with High-Fat High-Cholesterol Diet through Attenuation of Lipid Peroxidation

Abstract: Fruits are rich in fiber and antioxidant compounds that can prevent and treat health disorders related to oxidative stress caused by high-fat high-cholesterol diet (HFHCD). Bouea macrophylla is a tropical fruit plant with edible juicy fruits. In this study, we conducted experiments to prove the effectiveness of B. macrophylla fruit juice (BMFJ) as an antioxidant agent in rats fed with HFHCD. Male Sprague Dawley rats were fed with HFHCD for 100 days and simultaneously orally supplemented with BMFJ. Atorvastatin… Show more

“…Superoxide dismutase is an important antioxidant enzyme involved in defense against reactive oxygen species. [ 24 ] Malonaldehyde is the by‐product of lipid peroxidation induced by severe oxidative stress [ 25 ] ; its levels directly reflect the number of free radicals in an individual and the degree of lipid peroxidation and indirectly reflect the degree of cell damage. [ 26 ] Nitric oxide can react with proteins, nucleic acids, and other macromolecules to damage organisms and, in severe cases, can directly cause tissue and cell damage.…”

“…This means that Z. mauritiana fruit juice phenolics content was around 1 to 12 times higher compared to these other fruit juices. Nevertheless, of course, there are also many fruit juices that have a higher content of phenolics, for example, the total phenolic compounds in freeze-dried juice of Bouea macrophylla fruit juice is 57,000 mg GAE/100g (Effendi et al, 2022) and in Ecballium elaterium, freeze-dried fruit juice is 7870 -10,640 mg GAE/100g (Felhi et al, 2016). Phenolic compounds are natural compounds found in plants and are products of plant secondary metabolism.…”

“…The low antioxidant activity of the fruit juices was reported by many researchers, for example, IC50 of freeze-dried juice of apple (Malus domestica) is 805.11 ppm, Canarium sp. is 370,84 ppm(Utami et al, 2019), and Bouea macrophylla is 564.271 ppm(Effendi et al, 2022).…”
