Supported ionic liquids: ordered mesoporous silicas containing covalently linked ionic species

Abstract: Ordered mesoporous silicas with hexagonal or lamellar architectures incorporating covalently bound ionic species were synthesized via a template directed hydrolysis-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with triethoxysilylated imidazole [(EtO)(3)Si(CH(2))(3)-Im] or alkylimidazolium halides [(EtO)(3)Si(CH(2))(3)-Im(+)-R Hal(-)].

“…Mukherjee and co-workers immobilized 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane(APS) and 3-mercaptopropyl-triethoxysilane upon mesoporous silica to prepare monodispersed gold nanoparticles on the MCM-41 [20,21], the supported gold nanoparticles were found to be highly active for hydrogenation reactions and no leaching of gold was observed in the reaction. Furthermore, Ionic Liquids(IL) were also found to be capable of transferring gold nanoparticles from aqueous solution to Ionic Liquids through phase transformation [22], which can also be immobilized upon mesoporous silica through grafting methods [23], thus, motivating our experiments for enabling gold nanoparticle immobilization upon IL modified mesoporous silica.…”

“…Recently, several groups reported the successful synthesis of silica-based ionic liquids, [8] while reports on ordered ionic liquids functionalized mesoporous materials are still quite rare. [9] Herein, we report the synthesis of MPImCl and ionic liquid functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous material and its catalytic activity toward Knoevenagel condensation under solvent-free conditions. The resulting hetergeneous catalyst could be easily recovered with high catalytic activity remaining after 10 cycles.…”

“…The P 3 compounds were prepared from benzylimidazole triethoxysilane by a adapting a procedure typically used for the synthesis of imidazole-containing materials: [14] 1-[4-(trimethoxysilyl)-benzyl]imidazole (1, 1 equiv.) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (30 equiv.)…”
