Supporting in situ conservation of the genetic diversity of crop wild relatives using genomic technologies

Abstract: Crop wild relatives (CWRs) play a critical role in ensuring food and nutritional security, economic development as well as environmental sustainability. It is estimated that there are about 50,000-60,000 CWR species globally, out of which 700 need to be prioritized for conservation (Maxted & Kell, 2009). Some of these CWRs and wild food plants are usually harvested and used as food and source of income, for example during periods of drought and food scarcity.More importantly, they are a source of readily avail… Show more

“…Targeted efforts are now being made to sequence rare and threatened species of plants as a tool to aid conservation, both in situ [17] and ex situ [18]. This is more urgent among critically endangered species, for which a genome sequence may be all we can retain as the species are lost to extinction.…”

“…Volume 31 showcased reviews and syntheses on fish environmental DNA (Yao et al, 2022), metabarcoding in fungi (Tedersoo et al, 2022), in situ conservation of crop relatives' diversity (Wambugu & Henry, 2022), marine phylogeography (Martins et al, 2022), the role of species identity on insect microbiota (Malacrinò, 2022), and how humans affect rates of phenotypic change (Sanderson et al, 2022). These reviews signalled sentiments for a need to discover diversity across diverse taxa and that the conservation of diversity remains a fundamental concern of molecular ecologists.…”

“…These strategies could mitigate the decline of genetic diversity and can provide access to genetic variants better adapted to unprecedented challenges of the current seaweed farming systems. Other con servation strategies that can be applied for eucheu matoids include ex situ conservation such as germplasm banking through culture (De La Fuente et al 2019;Wade et al 2020;Watanabe 2005) and cryopreservation (Yang et al 2021), as well as in situ conservation (Wambugu and Henry 2022). The high number of cultivars in the Philippines makes the region an excellent area for the discovery of new cultivars that can be preserved and their economic potential explored in future crop selection and breed ing programs.…”
