Supporting Reflection on Self-Directed Learning Process in Hyperspace.

Abstract: Hypermedia/hypertext-based resources for learning generally provide learners with hyperspace, which consists of pages and links among the pages. In the hyperspace, they can navigate the pages in a self-directed way to learn the domain concepts/knowledge. The navigation often involves constructing knowledge, in which they would make semantic relationships among the contents learned in the navigated pages. Such self-directed learning in hyperspace requires learners to reflect on their knowledge construction proc… Show more

“…Exploration is one of the main approaches in the constructivist learning theory (Murphy, 1997, Stager, 2001). An exploration activity can be defined as searching information resources to comprehend the information and to acquire knowledge (Kashihara, Kinshuk, Oppermann, et al, 1998). The exploration activities include search, variation, experimentation, play, flexibility, discovery, or innovation (March, 1991).…”

“…The model of navigational learning proposed in our previous work (10) does not include this phase, which expects learners to navigate Web pages about the related questions occurring in the navigational learning process instead of carrying out the question decomposition. The lessons learned also suggest that the knowledge construction tends to be structured but intensive for specific questions.…”
