Supporting seamless learners: exploring patterns of multiple device use in an open and distance learning context

Abstract: Educators need to be aware of not just what their students are learning, but how and why as well. This study investigates how Open and Distance Learning (ODL) students make use of multiple devices for learning, particularly how students use their devices together. This study is situated in the context of 'seamless learning', where ODL students learn at different times, in different locations and with the use of different technologies. Understanding the needs and learning practices of students can help to impro… Show more

“…It should be understood that learners in today's education scene have the ability to use various mobile and digital devices to aid their learning (Krull & Duart, 2019). Krull and Duart (2019) also found in their study that learners practice using their mobile devices in a sequential manner, for example, learner may have started their learning using their first device, but later decided to continue or complete the learning on another mobile device. They also identified the patterns among learners that use their device in a sequential manner.…”

“…Digital technology can make communication and data collection easier, which can directly enhance YPE. Through the use of mobile technology devices and services, one can communicate, collaborate, and conduct seamless learning with others with no time or space limitations (Krull and Duart, 2017; Traxler, 2016). Students today can engage in sophisticated learning activities anywhere and anytime using mobile technology (Murphy et al, 2014).…”
