Supporting the Sustainable Development of Railway Transport in Developing Countries

Abstract: Generally, the development process of the railway transport system is determined by the market pull effects initiated by the economy and society and the market push effects induced by technological progress. The policymakers can provide a balance between these two effects; this results in more effective, safer, and greener future railway systems. In developing countries, the railway systems lag compared to the developed economies. Therefore, the supporting management tools and legal supports for policymakers a… Show more

“…In this research, total load monitoring systems were integrated and tested in pilots’ and ATCOs’ working environments. However, the developed load management methods and sensor technologies can be applied not only in cockpits and ATMs but also in the working environment of all other modes of transportation (air, road, rail, maritime) [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. Figure 1 shows futuristic in-car technologies as an example.…”

“…Therefore, awareness is needed to make the barriers learn and realize the importance of green rail procurement management. Wangai et al [10] stated that the railway in Kenya would be sustainable assuming it implements market pull and pushes with adequate management and legal support. The limitation of this research is its inability to explain the importance of environmental aspects in the sustainability of railways in Kenya without outlining the critical role of Technological Push.…”
