How Humble Leadership Influences the Innovation of Technology Standards: A Moderated Mediation Model

Management researchers have paid increasing attention to the role of humble leadership in innovation activities. The underlying mechanisms through which leader humility influences team innovation and outcomes, however, remain unclear. We aim to investigate the impact of humble leadership on the innovation of technology standards via knowledge exchange and combination and job complexity. We apply the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to the survey data from 354 individuals who participated in technology standard innovation activities in China. Our empirical results show that knowledge exchange and combination play a mediating role between humble leadership behavior and the innovation of technology standards. Particularly, we find that job complexity moderates the positive relationship between knowledge exchange and combination and the innovation of technology standards in a nonlinear way. This is the first time that the latent mechanisms of humble leadership have been identified in the innovation of technology standards based on knowledge-based theory.

Given the dearth of studies in developing and Asian countries’ context, the present study attempts to excavate the predictors of enterprise resource planning (ERP) adoption and implementation. Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model and open innovation literature, an extended model is proposed encompassing mediator and moderator variables. The study follows the deducting reasoning approach with the positivism paradigm. Out of 235 responses, the study used 225 replies collected through a self-administered sampling, and the data were analyzed by using PLS-based structural equation modeling. The study revealed that the hypothesized direct influences are significant except the influence of facilitating conditions on actual use. Likewise, the intention to use mediates the impact of facilitating conditions on the actual use of ERP. However, there is no moderating effect of education and firms’ size among the hypothesized influence. The study contributes to advance the previous findings by using an extended UTAUT model and validates results with the rest of the world.

Due to high quality at low costs, Bangladesh has long been of interest to retailers as a location for sourcing garments. In 2012 and 2013 however, two disasters drew the world's attention to the poor working conditions of the garment workers there, which in turn led to demands that these conditions should be improved. However, many factory owners continue to view compliance as a cost and are reluctant to improve standards. Based on data from 444 workers in the ready‐made garments industry, this study focuses on the mediating effect of job satisfaction on compliance with improved standards, and employee engagement. The findings confirm that compliance acts as a distal antecedent to employee engagement and job satisfaction fully mediates the compliance–engagement relationship. The results shed light on the significance of compliance with standards in terms of long‐term profitability, and retaining an engaged workforce. They highlight the value of good management practices when implementing compliance in the garment factories of Bangladesh and provide guidance for policymakers and groups concerned with the working conditions of garment workers in Bangladesh and elsewhere.
