“…Although expressing HNK-1 (CD57), which was initially thought to be human natural killer cell specific, these cells were not cytotoxically active. Under certain circumstances, we found that these cells could either suppress or enhance immunoglobulin production by pokeweed mitogen-activated tonsillar B cells (Banerjee, D. et al, 1988). Such cells are now recognized to be specialized CD4+ T cells called follicular helper T cells (T FH ) that home to the germinal center and play a pivotal role in regulating the fate of B cell in the germinal centre reaction.…”
