“…Consider cyclic (H 2 O) 4 tetramers, also known as R4 water clusters. ,, The X-ray structure of [Na 2 (H 2 O) 6 (H 2 O@TMEQ[6])]·2(C 6 H 5 NO 3 )Cl 2 (H 2 O) 10 contains an R4 cluster, but there are so many other H 2 O molecules in the lattice that vibrational spectra were not reported (TMEQ[6] = α,α′,δ,δ′-tetramethylcucurbit[6]uril) . Copper(II) pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylates crystallized with R4 clusters hydrogen bonded to other H 2 O molecules . The analysis of the ν(OH) region of their FTIR spectra consisted of one sentence: “IR spectra of complexes show strong bands between 3386 and 3142 cm –1 due to the O–H stretching vibrations of H 2 O molecules.” The X-ray structure of Cu(abit)(NO 3 )·5H 2 O contains a “water tape” of R4 tetramers and R6 hexamers (Habit = 4-amino-3,5-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-1,2,4-triazole) .…”

Room-temperature-attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of the structurally characterized crystalline lithium salt Li 2 (H 2 O) 4 (B 12 F 12 ), which contains a cyclic S 4 symmetry (H 2 O) 4 cluster, and several partially or completely deuterated isotopologs, suggest the following conclusions: (i) B and E normal modes gave rise to two distinguishable ν(OH bound ) bands, separated by 42 cm −1 , two distinguishable ν(OH free ) bands, separated by 13 cm −1 , and two distinguishable δ(HOH) bands, separated by 19 cm −1 , in the FTIR spectrum of Li 2 (H 2 O) 4 (B 12 F 12 ); (ii) B and E normal modes gave rise to two distinguishable ν(OD bound ) bands separated by 20 cm −1 in the FTIR spectrum of Li 2 (D 2 O) 4 (B 12 F 12 ); (iii) coupling between ν(OH bound ) and ν(OH free ) normal modes or between ν(OD bound ) and ν(OD free ) normal modes is weak, but finite, and resulted in shifts of 4−10 cm −1 for the respective bands in the spectra of Li 2 (H 2 O) 4 (B 12 F 12 ) vs Li 2 (HOD)(D 2 O) 3 (B 12 F 12 ) or in the spectra of Li 2 (D 2 O) 4 (B 12 F 12 ) vs Li 2 (HOD)(H 2 O) 3 (B 12 F 12 ); and (iv) a δ(DOD) band for an S 4 (D 2 O) 4 cluster, at ca. 1202 cm −1 , was observed for the first time. In addition, FTIR spectra of the lithium salt containing cyclic [(HOD)(H 2 O) 3 ] or [(HOD)(D 2 O) 3 ] clusters are the first examples in which bands that are unambiguously assigned to both HO−D•••O and DO−H•••O hydrogen bonds in the same sample have been observed for a water tetramer.

New coordination polymers, formulated as {[Zn( µ -sipH)( µ -apim)] · 3H 2 O} n (1) andwere synthesized based on the 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole (apim) along with 5-sulfoisophthalate (sip) ligands. The complexes were synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The X-ray crystallographic studies of 1 and 2 reveal Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions are µ -bridged by dianionic sipH and trianionic sip ligands in bis(monodentate) and bis(bidentate) coordination mode, respectively, to generate 1D polymer chains. In complex 1, the adjacent chains are linked by two apim ligands to form a 1D nanotubular structure. Complex 2 is the first example of a protonated apimH ligand. In the complexes the adjacent 1D chains extend into a 3D supramolecular network by hydrogen bonds.The thermal decomposition behavior and photoluminescent property of the complexes are also discussed herein.
