“…Herein, we report the design, synthesis, CT-DNA interaction, and condensation properties of two novel viologen-functionalized tetraphenylethylene (TPE-V) molecules. TPE chromophores are well known for their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and there are few reports on TPE-DNA conjugates for sensing and catalytic applications (Lou et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2015;Geng et al, 2017;Krishnan et al, 2018;Rothenbühler et al, 2020). Here, we describe the interactions of random aggregates of these molecules in Tris buffer with CT-DNA through electrostatic/ groove binding modes, which form an initial "beads-on-a-string" type assembly and subsequent completely charge-neutralized compact DNA structures at higher concentrations of TPE derivatives.…”

“…1 . The preparation of all TPE-modified oligonucleotides was carried out according to published procedures 39 via solid-phase synthesis using phosphoramidite chemistry and subsequent HPLC purification. The length of the sticky ends varies from one to three TPE units (duplexes 1–3) in a 20-mer DNA.…”

“…9 In particular, the employment of water as a medium opens the possibility of using highly polar and even ionic compounds as building blocks for the assembly of supramolecular systems. Supramolecular polymers assembled in aqueous medium find applications in biomedical engineering, 2,[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] sensing, 17 organic electronics, 18 light harvesting [19][20][21][22][23] and solar energy conversion. 9,24 For the assembly of supramolecular structures with special spectroscopic and light-harvesting properties, p-conjugated and aromatic molecules are of particular interest.…”

“…2,9 We have previously observed light-harvesting properties in various types of supramolecular assemblies of oligophosphates based on phenanthrenes and tetraphenylethylene in aqueous medium. [19][20][21]25 Further, pyrene trimers showed interesting spectroscopic properties due to their selfassembly into nanosheets. 26 These polyaromatic oligomers were joined by phosphodiester linkages and, thus, were of anionic nature.…”
