Supramolecular Organization of ssDNA‐Templated π‐Conjugated Oligomers via Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract: The templated self‐assembly of water‐soluble π‐conjugated molecules bearing a diaminotriazine moiety H‐bonding to a single‐strand oligothymine template leads to defined structures. We study these assemblies with molecular modeling, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and scanning probe microscopy, to get a better understanding of the factors governing the supramolecular organization and structural order.

“…27,28 This observation indicates that the extent of the red-shift in l max (due to unfolding/planarization of the polymer chains upon DNA binding) is related to the charge ratio R À/+ , likely ruling the stoichiometry of the selfassembly. [34][35][36] For dT 20 /CPT, the sign of the ICD is attributed to a preferential right-handed helical conformation of the polymer within the dT/CPT complex. However, above a molar ratio of 1 : 0.6, l max gradually shifts back towards lower wavelengths, eventually yielding a slightly blue-shifted absorption maximum at a 1 : 1 molar ratio, but with a very large shoulder still present in the 500-550 nm region (Fig.…”

“…All experiments were carried out in 50 mm Tris-HCl buffer at pH 7.5 and low salt concentration (0.1 m NaCl). [24] When CP was mixed with a solution containing the T40-G1 complex in a thymine/CP ratio of 10:1, the Cotton effect of the complex was retained (Figure 2 a), thus showing that G1 maintains its helical arrangement. These conditions ensure a high degree of binding between G1 and T40 ( Figure S1 in the Supporting Information).…”

“…[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Viruses have also been used as robust and monodisperse scaffolds for the incorporation of chemical entities both in their inner cavities and on their exterior surfaces. [18][19][20][21] Herein, we describe a unique strategy to assemble chromophoric molecules into very long helical stacks by using both types of biological scaffolds outlined above, that is, DNA to template the chromophore assembly [22][23][24] and the Cowpea chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV) protein to create nanotubes that can hold the DNA-chromophore architectures.CCMV [25,26] is an icosahedral virus with an outer diameter of 28 nm and an inner cavity 18 nm in diameter. “…Indeed, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy has been shown to be a powerful tool to probe the induction/amplification of chirality in supramolecular systems, [17][18][19] especially for (oligo)nucleotide-templating systems in which the biomolecule induces a chiral conformation/assembly to the bound achiral chromophore. 1,8,11,14,[20][21][22][23][24][25] Therefore, the induced chiroptical signals of GuaBiPy could be ultimately utilized to probe the enzymatic ATP hydrolysis.…”
