Supratentorial hemispheric ependymomas: an analysis of 109 adults for survival and prognostic factors

Abstract: IntracranIal ependymomas are the third most common glioma in adults, behind astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas. Ependymomas constitute 3% of primary CNS tumors and 6.7% of gliomas diagnosed each year in the US. 31,32 Safe maximal resection remains the mainstay of treatment. Radiation and chemotherapy may be provided as adjuvant treatments, especially in the setting of subtotal resection (STR). Reported 5-year overall survival (OS) rates for adults with intracranial ependymoma range widely from 35% to 90%. 9,1… Show more

“…In the majority of studies, extent of resection has emerged as one of the most significant predictors of outcome. [28][29][30][31][32][33] In a retrospective series of WHO grade II ependymomas in adults, 31 the 5-and 10-year OS rates were 86.1% and 81%, respectively. Preoperative KPS, extent of resection, and tumor location were independent prognostic factors for OS.…”

“…Surgery is the first step of standard treatment. In the majority of studies, the extent of resection has emerged as one of the most significant predictors of outcome [ 2 , 47 52 , 53 •]. In a retrospective series of WHO grade 2 ependymomas in adults [ 51 ], gross total resection (GTR) and infratentorial location were associated with a longer OS.…”

“…Анализ литературы показывает, что общая выживаемость при различных стратегиях лечения (например, системное лечение, повторное облучение или хирургическое повторное вмешательство с последующей адъювантной терапией) существенно не различалась. Как и ожидалось, более пожилой возраст, распространение опухоли на несколько долей и использование КС были значительно связаны с более короткой выживаемостью [71][72][73][74].…”
