Surface Activity and Performance Properties of Gemini Salts of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate in Aqueous Solution

Abstract: Gemini salts of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LABS) were prepared by neutralization of sulfonic acid with a series of low-molecular-weight diamines in aqueous solution. The equilibrium surface activity of Gemini salts of LABS was determined by measuring the surface tension as a function of surfactant concentration to determine the critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension at the CMC (γ CMC ), and the area per molecule at the air-water interface (Å 2 ). Electrical conductivity was measured as a fun… Show more

“…These ion peaks were measured at ESI (+) m/z 366.26, consistent with the reduction of Compound 1, and further confirmed through the high-resolution mass spectrum and MS/MS analysis (Figure S6). Based on the MS/MS results and prior reports 14,23 , we speculated that these two product peaks are epimers of Compound 2 (Figure S7), which we call Compounds 2A and 2B. To confirm that both peaks are reduction products of Compound 1, we chemically reduced the compound in a crude extract using sodium borohydride.…”

“…Surfactants can be categorized into four groups based on dissociation activity, including cationic, anionic, amphoteric, and nonionic [11]. The foam properties of varying surfactants differ, and whether they can be adapted to and applied in coal reservoirs remains to be investigated [12][13][14][15]. During the foam-fracturing fluid flowing in the wellbore, the formation temperature will also change with the increase in wellbore depth [16][17][18].…”

“…Commercial LAS surfactants are usually complex mixtures of homologs [24] (i.e., different lengths of the alkyl chain). Heterogeneous components improve performance, making LAS widely used in different industries, such as cosmetics, detergents, and mineral extraction [25][26][27][28]. However, this heterogeneity also makes it more complicated to clarify the detailed functions of the pure LAS.…”
