Surface and Biological Activity of Organoammonium Hydrogen Selenite Surfactants

Abstract: In this article we show steps taken toward the development of bactericidal and fungicidal synthetic cationic surfactants by the reaction of decyl, dodecyl or tetradecyl amine with selenious acid to produce a series of quaternary ammonium salts which consequently converted to copper and cobalt cationic complexes via complexing them with copper (II) or cobalt (II) ions. Surface properties of these surfactants were investigated. The surface properties studies included critical micelle concentration (CMC), maximum… Show more

“…However, in the synthesis research of the quaternary surfactants, the structure diversifying of the hydrophobic part is always concerned [1][2][3][4][5]. In addition, the quaternary ammonium salts are usually synthesized by using alkyl halides as alkylating agents, which inevitably contaminate the environment and bring toxicity to the target products.…”

“…Antimicrobial activities of the PFOEs and DDEs were tested against three gram-positive (S. aureus, S. epidermidis, S. pyogenes) and seven gram-negative (E. coli, P. vulgaris, E. cloacae, S. typhimurium, S. marcescens, K. pneumoniae P. aeruginosa) bacteria using the disc diffusion assay. 8 Tetracycline has been used as reference because it is a broad spectrum polyketide antibiotic. Table 10 summarizes the antimicrobial activity results.…”

“…Quaternary nitrogen compounds act as amphiphilic cations in aqueous solution so many cationic surfactants are used as pesticides and antimicrobial against wide spectrum of organisms as well as for killing sulfate reducing bacteria which can exist in petroleum field and causes many problems such as block out pipe line, produced H 2 S toxic gas, form iron sulfide hard scale and causes microbial corrosion [36][37][38]. Therefore, the microbial activity of the synthesized cationic surfactants was screened against Gram-positive (Staphlyococcus aureus and B. subtilis), Gram-negative (E. coli and Pseudomonas aeuroginosa) and pathogenic fungi (C. albicans and A. niger).…”
