Surface Complexation of Copper(II) with Alizarin Red S Adsorbed on a Graphite Electrode and Its Possible Application in Electroanalysis

Abstract: Alizarin red S (ARS) has been used previously as a spectrophotometric reagent for several metals. It has been also employed as an electrode modi®er agent for voltammetric analysis. With the purpose of studying the electrochemistry of the adsorbed ARS ligand and the surface ARS-copper(II) complex, on the pyrolytic graphite electrode, cyclic voltammetric experiments were carried out in open and closed circuits. The results indicate that ARS is strongly and irreversibly adsorbed on the electrode surface. This ads… Show more

“…Here, P 1 and P 2 correspond to the step-wise one electron reduction from Cu(II) to Cu(I), and from Cu(I) to Cu(0), respectively, while P 3 corresponds to two electron oxidation from Cu(0) to Cu(II). Similar electrochemical behavior has been reported for CuSO 4 solution [17] and copper electrodes [11,12]. Fig.…”

Li et al [21] analyzed the adsorption voltammetry of the mix-polynuclear complex of zirconium-calcium-Alizarin Red S at a carbon paste electrode. Filho et al [22] investigated the surface complexation of copper(II) with Alizarin Red S adsorbed on a graphite electrode. Kurepa et al [23] worked on the uptake and distribution of ultrasmallanatase TiO 2 Alizarin Red S nanoconjugates in Arabidopsis thaliana.…”

“…In order to solve this problem, chemically modified electrodes are widely used to eliminate the interference of AA with the determination of DA [3][4][5][6][7]. Many mixed valent compounds such as oxids, complexes, or alloys of copper [8][9][10], cobalt [11][12][13] and ruthenium [14][15][16] have shown electrocatalytic properties. Transition metal complexes as catalysts have received much attention because of their almost exclusive biological function in living systems.…”
