Surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy of monolayers

Abstract: The enhanced infrared spectra of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers deposited on rough metal island films are presented. The nature and properties of surface-enhanced infrared (SEIR) spectra are discussed and compared with those of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The geometry and polarization properties of the SEIR experiment were investigated. For practical applications, it is shown that a single sample can be prepared to obtain SERS and SEIR spectra. The use of different metals for SERS and SEIR, in… Show more

“…36,37,41 Also in terms of the peak size, the data presented here agree with previously reported values for different ML sample systems. 36,[42][43][44] Note that the peak absorbance of ML samples at metal surfaces is likely to be influenced by local field surface-enhancement effects, 42,[45][46][47] which will contribute to the 2D ATR IR spectroscopy as well, an effect that is currently under investigation and will be published as a separate account.…”

“…SEIRRAS has been used for the characterization of 4-pyridinethiol [331] and mercaptoundecanoic acid [331] SAMs, Langmuir±Blodgett films, [320] the absorption of water on titanium dioxide thin films, [329] and the adsorption of such simple molecules as p-nitrophenol, [321,322,333] pyrazine, [332] iron carbonyl, [323] stearic acid, [324] p-nitrobenzoic acid, [272,327] and fumaric acid. [328] In has also been employed for spectroelectrochemistry, in particular for examining the potential-dependent reorientation of water molecules, [334] potential modulation, [117,334,335] and electron transfer.…”
