Surface functionalization of silica nanoparticles to improve the performance of water flooding in oil wet reservoirs

Abstract: Over the past few years, increasing attention has been devoted to the applications of special engineered nanoparticles in enhancing oil recovery. Earlier studies reported the effects of these particles on wettability alteration of reservoir rock. The present study presents a new method for modifying the surface properties of silica nanoparticles to make them more effective for enhancing oil recovery purposes. Contact angle, interfacial tension measurements, and core flood experiments were performed to examine … Show more

“…2) showed the characteristics bands of Si-O-Si asymmetric vibration and Si-OH asymmetric stretching vibration at 1048 and 948 cm −1 , respectively [8]. After modification of Neg-SNPs with APTES (AP-SNPs), a new peak at 1556 cm −1 due to N-H bending vibration of amine groups is observed [4], which demonstrates that the amino groups were grafted onto the surface of Neg-SNPs. When the SNPs were modified with MeO-PEG 2K (MeO-PEG-SNPs) it was observed the stretching vibrations at 1690 and 2982 cm −1 corresponding to the carbonyl of the carbamate group and the C-H of the PEG chain, respectively.…”

“…The authors summarized different functionalized NPs, particularly SiO 2 NPs, to achieve various influential factors in nano-stabilized foam. To this effect, Azarshin et al (2017) experimentally investigated the effect of silane-modified SiO 2 NPs in waterflood injection scenario and concluded by applauding the role of surface coating to influence the IFT and contact angle and ultimately increased oil production by 18% relative to uncoated NPs. Similarly, Al Yousef et al (2017Yousef et al ( , 2019 in their foam stabilization experiment using surface-functionalized NPs found out that functionalized NPs have the ability to decrease gas mobility.…”

“…The tools can be used to understand the synergistic or antagonistic responses of the input parameters on the output through response surface methodology (RSM). It also allows the development of regressional models that could give information on the quantitative contributions of the input parameters to output (Azarshin et al 2017).…”

“…Such excess water production usually results in increased environmental concerns, increased levels of corrosion and scale and ultimately leads to early shut-in of wells that still contain significant volumes of hydrocarbons [3] [4] [5]. Currently, polymer flooding technology [6]- [13] is the proven tertiary oil recovery technique all over the world, however, the polymer solution readily crossflow [14] [15] [16] in thief zone. The crossflow causes an invalid injection [17] [18] [19].…”
