“…29 Nevertheless RHEED patterns obtained from the MgO (111) surface after annealing did not seem to indicate substrate surface reconstruction in our case. This is quite interesting in view of the high instability predicted for this surface but it is also consistent with the findings of Warot et al 30 As stated above the epitaxial growth of Ni films is highly favored when the substrate temperature is 300 o C. RHEED indicates that the Ni growth is characterized by highly strained layers during the early stages that relax to bulk Ni very rapidly indicating that the relaxation of the strain is achieved by a large number of dislocations near the interface. This was confirmed by STM images of the surface, which show many vacancy islands at the center of hexagonal terraces.…”

“…The influence of structural effects in the Ni 2p XPS spectra should also be evaluated. For instance, Warot et al 23 found that the surface morphology of the NiO overlayer depends on the surface orientation in different MgO single-crystal substrates. In our case, the AFM images of the MgO substrate shown in Fig.…”

“…[16][17][18] In particular, the growth of thin NiO films on MgO has been studied in more detail. 9,[19][20][21][22][23] NiO has been found to grow epitaxially on MgO ͑100͒ single crystal. Studies on the electronic structure by XPS during the growth process of NiO on MgO ͑100͒ show that for a coverage of 1 ML, the main line of the Ni 2p XPS spectra is narrowed and slightly shifted to higher binding energies.…”

“…Successive (1 1 1) sheets are coupled antiparallely. Thus, the NiO {0 0 1} and {1 1 0} planes are spin compensated surfaces with no resulting moment nor electrical charge while NiO{1 1 1} is a polar surface carrying a magnetic moment [8]. The lattice mismatch between NiO and Fe 3 O 4 is to 0.5% (considering half of the spinel cell).…”
