Surface Plasmon Resonance Instruments

Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) instruments comprise three essential units integrated in one system: optics, liquid handling unit, and the sensor chip. The quality of each of these components reflects the overall performance of the SPR instrument. In this chapter, a short description is given of SPR and SPR-like products from 27 companies. General features of commercial SPR instruments and their typical performances are described, providing insight into the development of SPR technology to its current state in… Show more

“…Analyte-specific antibodies are immobilized onto the metal layer of the sensor chip, mounted onto a glass prism with an integrated flow cell that is then placed in the instrument. When polarized light shines through the prism, the light is reflected by the metal layer, resulting in an angle of incidence capable of inducing surface plasmon resonance and causing a dip in the reflected light intensity [136]. The refractive index near the metal surface will change as proteins are adsorbed onto the metal surface and the amount of adsorbed protein can then be determined.…”

“…SPR technique works are based on two types of configurations, namely Kretschman and otto. The technique allows for measurement of each bound molecule in a form of shift observed at the surface of the sensor 9 , 10 . Among the advantages of SPR biosensors are the small size, high-resolution detection, remote sensing feature, etc., making them useful for detection of biochemical molecules, particularly in environmental and clinical applications 11 .…”

“…When the target analyte is captured by the ligand, it causes a measurable signal. Various sensor surfaces with immobilized ligands are commercially available and/or can be custom designed and fabricated [ 56 ]. In general, plasmonic sensors are created of sensing elements that contain metal or metal-dielectric nanostructures supporting surface plasmons and recognition elements that can selectively bind a target analyte.…”
