Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of alternative disinfection methods of heat cured acrylic resin and thermoplastic resin denture base materials and to investigate the porosity resulting from disinfection by these methods. Material and Methods: Disc specimens of heat cured acrylic resin and thermoplastic resin were fabricated and divided into four groups for each denture base material according to the disinfection method. The specimens were contaminated in vitro by standardized suspensions of Candida albicans (C. albicans).The following test agents were used: distilled water (as a control group), 5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 100% white vinegar and 650 W microwave (MW) energy. After the disinfection procedure, the number of viable microbial cells was counted in CFU/ml. Porosities of acrylic resin and thermoplastic resin specimens were evaluated with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) after one month of daily exposure to disinfection. Results: ANOVA test showed that, there was a statistical significant difference among the tested treatment agents against C. albicans in each denture base material(P≤ 0.05). Post Hoc test showed a statistical significant difference between the control samples and the other disinfected samples in the microbial count, however, there was no statistical significant difference among the tested methods of disinfection (P>0.05).Regarding porosity area percentage, there was a statistical significant difference among the tested methods of disinfection (P≤ 0.05), where, 100% white vinegar showed the highest porosities followed by NaOCl then the MW disinfection and the least is the control group. Regarding comparison between the two denture base materials, thermoplastic resin showed statistically significant lower microbial adherence as well as lower porosity area percentage than heat cured acrylic resin(P≤ 0.05). Conclusion: All the tested disinfection methods shown to be efficient against C. albicans. Thermoplastic resin demonstrated lower microbial adherence than heat cured acrylic resin and lower porosity area percentages.

Aims:To evaluate the effect of incorporation of different types and concentrations of additives on water sorption denture base acrylic resin. Materials and Methods: Heat polymerized acrylic resin samples were prepared and divided into two groups; control group (without additives) and experimental group (with additives). The additives were three types of polymers (Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), Poly Ethylene Glycol (PE) and Poly Urethane (PU)) being added with three concentrations 1%, 3% and 5%. SPSS Version 19 was used to analyze and to assess the results of the present study by mean of Descriptive statistics, analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan multiple range tests at p ≤0.05. Results: The results reveal that there is statistically significant reduction in the amount of water sorption of experimental group as compared to that of control group at p≤ 0.05. The reduction in the amount of water sorption of experimental group is directly proportional to the concentration of incorporate additives . Conclusions: Water sorption of experimental group is less than that of control group. The additives produce statistically significant reduction in the amount of absorbed water of denture base resin and this reduction was directly proportional to the concentration additives material being used.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate effect of denture cleansers on surface roughness and color stability of polyamide and acetal denture base material. Material and methods: Fittydent and Clinsodent cleansing agents were used in this study and a total of (36) samples from polyamide and acetal denture base material were fabricated equally to evaluate their surface roughness and color stability after immersion in the test cleansing agent for immersion periods of 15, 30, and 45 days, respectively. Results:The results of this study revealed that there was no statistical significant difference in surface roughness and color stability of polyamide and acetal thermoplastic resin after immersion in the test cleansing agent for the test period. Conclusion: Usage of Fittydent and Clinsodent cleansing agents will adversely affect surface roughness or color stability of polyamide and acetal denture base material.
