In the California Current System (CCS), equatorward winds drive coastal upwelling, and consequently, colder sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are observed along the coast. Topographic features such as capes and headlands divert local winds, contributing to the formation of "upwelling shadows", characterized by warm SST anomalies. Ten years (2010-2019) of observations were used to investigate the seasonal and interannual variability of SST differences (ΔSST) between the Gulf of the Farallones (GoF) and open coast adjacent to Bodega Bay (BB),
California. Observations unveiled the presence of an upwelling shadow within the GoF betweenApril-October during all years analyzed. A multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that along-shelf wind stress and along-shelf wind stress differences between BB and GoF (proxy for wind stress curl) were the dominant mechanisms controlling interannual ΔSST variability, while solar radiation and the El Niño Southern Oscillation had negligible effects. Strong coastal upwelling in BB and a weak Ekman pumping in the GoF were found to be conducive to an increase in the ΔSST, hence the development of the upwelling shadow, while simultaneous coastal upwelling and a strong Ekman pumping, were found to decrease or eliminate ΔSST within the region, preventing the formation of the upwelling shadow. v Preface and/or Acknowledgements I would like to thank Piero Mazzini for his help visualizing and executing this research project. I would also like to thank my lab partners, Alyssa Ells and Rachel Jackson who contributed a great deal to this project. This project would not have been possible without the help of William Cochlan, Tom Connolly, Tomoko Komada, and Cassia Pianca, thank you all for your help. Facets of the administrative staff within the RIPTIDES program were very helpful, thank you. Special thanks to the Carver, Cochran, Nunes, Ryan, Serrano, and Suddes families for doing what families do.Respect due to all veterans that earned a degree after service, and last but not least a big thanks goes out to the Pedro Point Surf Club. vi
