Surface Visualization at CT Colonography Simulated Colonoscopy: Effect of Varying Field of View and Retrograde View

Abstract: CTC simulated 140 degrees optical colonoscopy visualizes over 85% of the colonic surface. 170 degrees colonoscopy provides a modest reduction in missed surface and the simulated addition of RVAIDs appears beneficial.

“…Second, 25 cancers were missed due to inaccurate interpretation, i.e., the examination was considered normal when a cancer was present. A variety of new technologies and novel techniques to improve the accuracy of diagnostic tests have been reported [31][32][33][34][35]. Third, if the examination is limited by poor preparation or patient difficulty with cooperation, the examination should be repeated after more preparation or with more sedation.…”

“…These methods aim to provide simultaneous viewing of a greater surface area of the colonic lumen than is displayed by typical 3D endoscopic views. One simple approach is to increase the viewing angle to widen the endoluminal field of view [20][21][22].…”

“…CT Colonography (CTC) is an attractive alternative to colonoscopy in symptomatic patients. It has equivalent accuracy, potentially visualises more of the bowel mucosa [4,5], is minimally invasive with no requirement of sedation and carries a low risk of procedure-related complications [6,7]. In addition, 10%-29% of CTC will identify therapeutically significant extracolonic lesions [8,9].…”
