Surface water connection and the macrozoobenthos of two types of floodplains on the upper rhine

Abstract: Macrozoobenthos (especially gastropods) abundance data have been used to ordinate sampling stations on two floodplains of the Upper Rhine with different hydraulic regimes: 30 species of gastropods were recorded in the area actively inundated by the Rhine, while backwaters that have not been flooded for over 50 years housed only 19 species.Potamopyrgus antipodarum is a characteristic species of the permanent aquatic biotopes fed by groundwater and connected with other floodplain waters. Small, isolated, and dry… Show more

“…First, the pattern of species richness in Poyang Lake and other waters conforms to the theory that α-diversity of macrobenthos in fl oodplain waters reaches a maximum at an intermediate level of connectivity (Obrdlik and Fuchs 1991;Tockner et al 1999;Ward et al 1999;Amoros and Bornette 2002). As already mentioned, the connected lake Poyang, which has the level of connectivity between disconnected lakes and rivers, is most species rich.…”

“…It was partially consistent with the observations of OBRDLIK & FUCHS (1991), who reported the highest species richness from small water bodies within the active floodplain of the Rhine River. However, considerable species richness and diversity were found not only within the natural floodplain of the lower Bug River, but also in some habitats located within the active one, constrained by flood control embankment, as well as in the former one.…”

“…If the highest species richness is always found in backwaters (Bis & Palm 1990, Tockner & Bretschko 1996, it is also, for the most part, positively correlated with the highest degree of connectivity (Gepp et al 1985). For exemple, Obrdlik & Fuchs (1991) collected 19 species of gastropods in the stable backwaters versus 30 species in the regularly flooded ones. In the same way, Tockner & Bretschko (1996) observed the maximum macroinvertebrate diversity in plesiopotamal waterbodies, a geomorphological type defined as connected to the main channel 43 to 160 days per annum.…”
