Surfacing a hidden literature

Abstract: Scholars throughout the world are working to diversify the knowledge base in educational leadership and management (EDLM). In concert with this effort, this article reports the results of a systematic review of research on EDLM in Africa. The goals of the review were to describe trends with respect to the volume of journal publications, national sources, research designs, methods, topics, authors and citation impact. The review database was comprised of 506 journal articles published on EDLM in Africa. A conce… Show more

“…Since the aim of the study is to analyse patterns of EDLM knowledge production in the Gulf region through mapping the salient features characterising this body of literature rather than an investigation of the nature of these features, a structural/functional rather than an interpretive/critical (Bryman, 2016) Different search strategies have been used by previous EDLM research reviews to identify relevant sources. Some employed unbounded search methods which involve the use of search engines such as Googlescholar to identify EDLM sources published in the English language (e.g., Hallinger, 2018a). Others identified potential sources by scanning a delimited set of international EDLM journals available online (e.g., Bellibaş and Gümüş, 2019;Castillo and Hallinger, 2017;Hallinger and Chen 2015;Hallinger and Hammad, 2019;Hammad and Hallinger, 2017).…”

“…Results of indirect effects showed that dis-satisfaction was a significant mediator between management support and the need for improvement. The results of the study by Hallinger (2018) indicate that subject mastery and the quality of delivering knowledge to students is quite challenging and effective strategies must be accounted for improving their performance. It is therefore, summarized that due to better management in public sector schools awareness of the appraisal system is enhanced but still a lot of improvement is needed for the satisfaction of teachers.…”
