“…3D airway reconstruction has been negatively compared with morphometric data, given that the former can result in incremental losses of data during each stage of the smoothing process [15]. Defining the vector field by user-drawn strokes, one has applied Laplacian smoothing over the mesh vertices for interpolating the field [16].…”

“…A study of otosclerotic temporal bones did not find any correlation between stapes and malleus fixation [17] . However, histological evidence that supports the correlation of stapes and malleus fixation was provided in 2002, as a high incidence of hyalinization of the anterior malleus ligament in the ears of patients suffering from otosclerosis was shown [16] . Another middle ear anomaly worth mentioning, which was intraoperatively identified, was the absence of the stapedius muscle tendon in 1 ear.…”

“…In a case series examining stapes and further ossicular abnormalities, malleus fixation was identified in thick-section CT in most of the cases but not in all of them [16,20,21] . Although the sections are thin enough (0.6 mm), it seems that fine abnormalities of the ossicles are not always easy to identify.…”

“…Temporal bone CT is useful for arriving at the diagnosis of malleus fixation, and exploratory tympanotomy leads to a definitive diagnosis. 3,6 Alternatively, lasers can be used to ablate the fixation, while preserving the ossicular chain. Shifting of the ossicular chain toward the site of fixation is a helpful clue.…”
