Surgery of Thymic Tumor with Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava

Abstract: Because a persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is a rare congenital malformation in the thoracic venous system, surgery of the thymus in such patients has rarely been reported. We herein present a case involving a 68-year-old woman who was treated for a thymic tumor adhering to a PLSVC. She underwent complete resection of the thymic tumor through median sternotomy with left-sided video-assisted thoracic surgery. Although the tumor was close to the left phrenic nerve, this nerve was safely preserved. The … Show more

“…We report a case of thymectomy with IPLSVC. Although a case with double persistent superior vena cava with anterior mediastinal tumor has been reported, a case with IPLSVC is quite rare [6] . A careful observation of the preoperative computed tomography images helps to diagnose IPLSVC [7] , [8] , [9] .…”

“…Other systemic therapies included CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone), CVP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisolone) and their combination with RTX, and differences among them were not pronounced. Yan et al (50) reported an interesting case in which the tumor shrank after using glucocorticoids for erythema. Because many individuals require glucocorticoids to treat autoimmune diseases, it was hypothesized that glucocorticoids would limit tumor growth.…”

“…However, as for those into the left atrium, they always demonstrate cyanosis of different degrees, and some require surgical treatment. At present, there are few reports regarding left lung cancer surgery combined with PLSVC [10], and some PLSVC patient may have other cardiovascular malformations at the same time [11], therefore, it needs to be extremely careful when performing left lung cancer surgery for such patients. In normal cases, some obvious cardiovascular malformations could be discovered by cardiac B-mode ultrasound and chest CT before surgery.…”
