Surgical and oncological outcomes after complete mesocolic excision in right-sided colon cancer compared with conventional surgery: a retrospective, single-institution study

Abstract: Surgical standardization of CME with CVL for right-sided colon cancer is associated with better staging and prognosis, particularly in UICC stage II and III. This study shows that CME is safe and reproducible with acceptable morbidity.

“…Laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, which has an obvious minimally invasive advantage in the abdominal cavity, has become one of the most established surgical methods used for gastrointestinal cancer surgery [15,16] . For the better application of CMEs in laparoscopic hemicolectomies for right colon carcinoma cases, the following points have been summarized in the literature [8,12,17,18] and in our clinical experience. First, a CME presents the concept of fine anatomy.…”

“…lon cancer have improved over the last decade [5,6] . Increasing evidence has reported that CMEs contribute to a decreased recurrence rate and increased five-year survival [4,7,8] . At present, a CME is considered to be the standard surgical method for treating colon cancer.…”

“…Around 19% of the patients had complications grade III-IV. The literature reports complication rates or postoperative morbidity rates associated with CME surgery from 19% to 35% (8,(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Reviews published for the last few years to evaluate the safety, quality, and effect of CME discuss the different ways of reporting complications and thus making comparisons difficult (16)(17)(18)(19)(20).…”

“…CSS was significantly improved in RCC patients with a minimum of 15 LNs examined, but the minimum requirement for better CSS could be reduced down to 11 LNs LCC patients 30 . Moreover, it has been suggested that postoperative survival rates of RCC and LCC patients may be affected by surgical treatment 31 . Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the prognostic impacts of the number of LNs examined and LN ratio in RCC and LCC patients, especially if patients undergoing different surgical treatments or at distinct cancer stages.…”
