Surgical management of extramural ectopic ureter by modified colposuspension following ureteroneocystostomy in a young female Siberian Husky dog

Abstract: Objective: Postoperative complication of extramural ectopic ureters (EEUs) with persistent urinary incontinence (UI) is common in Siberian Huskies. This case report was aimed at reporting the successful correction procedure of EEU in Siberian Huskies by surgical procedure. Materials and methods: A three-month-old and weighing 7.9 kg Siberian Husky dog was presented with history of an acute dermatitis around the genitals, swelling of the genitals and dribbling urination. Abdominal radiographs, ultrasonography, … Show more

“…The overall long-term continence rate after successful correction of EU reaches up to 81%. This continence rate can be improved by adjunct medical treatment, consisting mainly of α-adrenergic agents and application of colposuspension to treat stress incontinence due to urethral sphincter abnormalities, which are one of the major causes of recurrence of urinary incontinence (UI) after surgery [ 11 , 12 ].…”

“…It is known that ectopic ureters often occur with other abnormalities of urinary tract. Renal dysplasia, hydronephrosis, cystic hypoplasia or agenesis, megaureter, urethral abnormalities, vestibulovaginal malformations and urinary tract infections are among the most commonly reported concurrent abnormalities 18,20,24,26 . Compared to US, where intrapelvic structures cannot be confidently assessed, CT allows visualisation of the entire urinary tract.…”

“…The ureter is a narrow small duct that passes urine from the kidney to the bladder [ 7 , 8 ]. Therefore, several pathological conditions can be caused by ureteral obstruction, such as increased ureteral hydrostatic pressure, uteromegaly, ureter rupture, intrarenal hydrostatic pressure, hydronephrosis, reduced glomerular filtration rate in the ipsilateral kidney, and life-threatening azotemia, especially when the contralateral kidney is affected [ 8 , 9 ].…”
