Surgical management of primary, metastatic and recurrent anal sac adenocarcinoma in the dog: 52 cases

Abstract: Coeliotomy for lymph node metastatectomy in dogs with adenocarcinoma of the anal sac has low morbidity and should be considered in patients presenting with evidence of regional metastatic disease both at initial presentation and with recurrent disease.

“…6,7,[33][34][35] Furthermore, positive outcomes have been reported in dogs treated surgically, even in cases of metastatic disease. 30,35 In our study, only 7 dogs were treated in the microscopic disease setting. The small sample size and difficulty of true assessment of response in the microscopic disease setting restricted interpretation of our data, and therefore these findings should not be used to contradict the current gold standard treatment approach of aggressive surgical treatment, even in face of regional or distant metastasis.…”

“…Based on the multivariable Cox hazard model, toceranib treatment in the microscopic disease setting was associated with prolonged PFS but not with OST (Table ). Prolonged survival in dogs that had surgical treatment of AGASACA has been well documented in the veterinary literature . Furthermore, positive outcomes have been reported in dogs treated surgically, even in cases of metastatic disease .…”

“…Studies with dogs affected by perineal neoplasia report longer survival time in patients 1 Model XPRESS/G6, Toshiba. submitted to multimodal therapeutic approaches combining surgical resection, chemo and radiotherapy as indicated (Vail et al 1990, Bennett et al 2002, Dyce et al 2002, Polton & Brearley 2007, Palladino et al 2016, Barnes & Demetriou 2017. Surgical margins are a significant factor in tumor resection.…”

“…Metastatic lymph nodes can be removed by open ventral midline coeliotomy. Some lymph nodes are straightforward to excise for experienced surgeons, whilst others, mainly the sacral lymph nodes, are difficult to remove by this access (Barnes & Demetriou 2017) and a pubic osteotomy is necessary. Ultrasonography is thought to be a valuable imaging modality for abdominal lymph node evaluation.…”
