Surgical Results after Unilateral Laminectomy for the Removal of Spinal Cord Tumors

Abstract: ObjectiveTo reduce the risk of postoperative spinal instability or deformity, unilateral laminectomy (UL) has been recommended to remove spinal space-occupying lesions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were any advantages of UL for removal of spinal cord tumors.MethodsFrom May 1995 to May 2010, 94 patients with spinal cord tumors, who underwent tumor removal via UL in our institute, were enrolled in this study. Intramedullary spinal cord tumors were excluded. Simple radiographs were obt… Show more

“…Recent evidence suggests that unilateral laminectomy is effective in achieving complete resection of spinal tumors along with reducing the threat of postoperative deformity and spinal instability. 33,34 Re-surgery may be required in the presence of a residual tumor or tumor regrowth, and in the case of postoperative spinal instability. The present case has met the definition of a giant tumor.…”

“…Si bien la laminectomía es la técnica más utilizada para la resección de estas lesiones, complicaciones como cifosis postoperatoria, inestabilidad espinal y dolor axial persistente han sido reportados 20 . Lee et al 21 reportan que la hemilaminectomía no afecta la estabilidad espinal postoperatoria.…”

“…Today, the rationale for surgical excision of intraspinal tumors is to completely remove the tumor, maintain spinal stability and restore neurological function ( 1 3 ). Traditional laminectomies, which have been widely used in spinal surgery, are believed to provide adequate exposure to the spinal cord, nerve roots, and tumors, and thus may minimize intraoperative damage to the spinal cord ( 4 ). However, this procedure may result in persistent pain and spinal deformity after surgery due to the destruction of the posterior bony structures, supraspinal ligaments, interspinous ligaments, and paraspinal muscles bilaterally ( 5 ).…”
